Helvellyn Milky Way Arch

The Milky Way Arches across the sky from the summit of Helvellyn as the Galactic Core rises over the Pennines

Countless stars fill the sky and the constellations of Cassiopeia, Scorpius, Aquila and many others follow the arch of the Milky Way.  Our sister galaxy Andromeda lies 2.537 million light years away and can be seen above Swirral edge too.  The most distant object visible to the naked eye in our night sky

Description

Helvellyn Milky Way Arch
Red Tarn sits like a mirror with Swirral Edge and Striding edge and the last of the winters snow clinging to the lip around the summit as the Galactic Core of our galaxy rises and the Milky Way arches across the sky. In the distance you can see Ullswater and the lights of Penrith and surrounding towns and villages.

I would have loved to stand here and see the stars before all this light pollution. Must have been even more spectacular but specatacular none the less

One of my favourite mountains and an amazing place to spend the night. We chatted, took photos then watched the beautiful sunrise before heading down. Another stunning night in the mountains
This is a panorama of around 30 seperate photographs all taken in sequence at the same time and stitched together.  This allows me to take such detailed Astro/Landscape shots and capture such spectacular sights.  Think of it this way, if you look into the Galactic Core (the r/h side of the arch) you are looking deep into the centre of our Milky Way galaxy where 26,000 light years away lies a supermassive black hole named Sagittarius A* that is around 4 million times the mass of our sun.  Then if you look to the left hand side of the arch you are looking outwards away from the centre of our galaxy and out into the far less busy part of our galaxy and further than that deep space.  If you look to the right of the trig point above the red lights from the mast at Skelton you can actually see our sister galaxy Andromeda 2.537 million light years away.   This massive galaxy is 2 or 3 times bigger than our own and contains a Trillion stars.  Our two galaxies are actually on a collision course and in 3.5-4.5 Billion years they will merge and form another type of galaxy.  This coincides with the approximate heat death of our sun too.
All these things I find fascinating and mind bending but all things that keep me going out night after night trying to capture them with my camera
