Description
‘Winter Skies over Borrowdale’
Cygnus rising from behind Skiddaw with the winter Milky Way arching up the sky. Above Ashness Jetty, our sister galaxy Andromeda shines from 2.537 million light years away. The Andromeda galaxy is the most distant object visible to the naked ey in the night sky and contains a Trillion stars. Currently our 2 galaxies are hurtling through space towards each other at 300,000 mph, set to collide in 3.4-4.5 Billion years
The constellations of Cassiopeia and Perseus can also be seen and also the Double Cluster and Pleiades. The Double Cluster being 2 clusters over 20,000 stars 7500 light years away. Pleiades, also known as ‘The Seven Sisters’ or Messier 45 and other names by different cultures, is an asterism and an open star cluster containing middle-aged, hot B-type stars in the north-west of the constellation Taurus. At a distance of about 444 light years, it is among the nearest star clusters to Earth. It is the nearest Messier object to Earth, and is the most obvious cluster to the naked eye in the night sky. To the left of Pleiades, Mars can be seen shining brightly too
All in the skies over the beautiful valley of Borrowdale, with the lights of Keswick lighting Skiddaw, Derwent Water reflecting the stars & Milky Way and the hills of Catbell’s, Maiden Moor, Swinside & Causey Pike with a dusting of snow and ice.
