‘Eystrahorn Dawn’

We had driven to Hofn the day before after spending some time exploring off the beaten track and finding some great places to return to in the summer and next winter as we are planning on being back in Iceland for both. The plan had been to head to Hofn and hope for some clear skies and then go see the Vestrahorn and hope for the aurora. Well we arrived and soon after the clouds rolled in, meaning no stars or aurora but as we were a tad ruined from all the travelling, we got an early night, planning on doing the Vestrahorn at dawn.

As we woke I decided our best chance of something beautiful was to head further East and visit the Eystrahorn, in the hope of a dash of golden light from the sunrise. We arrived to a dark and moody sky with a landscape of muted greys and blues. We all flew our drones but soon the snow came and between the snow and the birds divebombing our drones we landed and hoped for a brief break in the clouds on the horizon, hoping for a splash of light. Well, as luck would have it, the universe provided. Lasting only a couple of minutes, it couldn’t have been better really.

Glad to have made the right choice of heading to the Eystrahorn first, we then landed, again avoiding the dive-bombing sea birds (above 100ft they leave you alone!) and then jumped in the car, hoping for another bit of colour and beautiful light at another favourite location, The Vestrahorn.
