Ribblehead Milky Way Arch

The Milky Way arches across the sky above the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct.   From left to right you can see Capella shining brightly and then the constellations of Perseus, Andromeda & Cassiopeia.  Below Cassiopeia you can see the most distant object visible to the naked eye not in our galaxy, our sister galaxy Andromeda.  Andromeda lies 2.537 million light years away and contains a trillion stars.  Currently our 2 galaxies are hurtling towards each other through space at 300,000 miles per hour, set to collide in 3.4-4.5 billion years from now.  In the centre lies the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan, or Northern Cross.  This constellation is full of beautiful nebulosity and colour and has a great number of deep space objects to capture with telescope & camera.  Vega can be seen high above and below right of this, the constellations of Aquila (The Eagle), Delphinus (The Dolphin), Ophiuchus (The Serpent Bearer), Serpens (The Serpent) & Scorpius (The Scorpion).
