Description

Borrowdale is a beautiful valley in the Northern Lake District, one I live close too and love and sometimes there is no better place to walk with the dogs and look at the stars above our beautiful Lake District.  This is a multi shot panorama showing the Galactic Core of our galaxy over Catbell’s and Derwent Water.  To the right of the shot you can see Friars crag poking out in to the lake and to the left the beautiful tree filled shoreline with Rampsholme Island (Island of wild garlic in Old Norse) and the lights of the Ladore Falls hotel at the end of the lake.  Catbell’s, Maiden Moor, Causey Pike and Walla Crag  make beautiful silhouettes in the star filled night.

The galactic core you can see here is actually massive clouds of dust and gas deep in the centre of our galaxy.  Here on Earth we are located half way down one of the spiral arms of the Milky Way it means at certain times of the year here in Cumbria we can look straight to the galactic centre where 26,000 light years away lies a supermassive black 4 million times the mass of our sun, names Sagittarius A*, the true heart of our galaxy.  Pretty mind blowing really!
